And while it’s only natural for puppies to whine, bark and growl, you’ll want to take the necessary steps to prevent these normal dog habits from turning into troublesome and excessive behaviors.
Try these puppy training tips and techniques, and watch how your furry friend turns into a well-behaved dog!
- First, make sure that any excessive puppy behavior isn’t the result of pent-up energy. Puppies are energetic by nature, so make sure that yours gets plenty of play and exercise!
- Puppies have notoriously short attention spans – and this can result in excessive barking. To curb this bad habit, give a loud clap or make a sharp sudden noise the next time your puppy barks. Once your puppy has stopped barking, direct their attention to a toy or treat as a reward. This negative/positive reinforcement teaches your puppy that being quiet leads to good things, while barking leads to a mild form of punishment.
- Don’t yell at your puppy if they bark too much. Yelling can alarm and frighten the dog, which can lead to even more barking!
- If your puppy pulls at your leash while going for walks, immediately stop walking and stand still. Wait until the dog returns to your side before rewarding him with praise. Repeat this process whenever your puppy starts to pull at the leash, and you’ll have a well-trained dog in no time!
